Saldanha Bay, South Africa: On 22 March 2025, at the West Coast Airshow in Saldanha, in the Western Cape Province of South Africa, our aviation community was struck by a profound tragedy. James O’Connell, a renowned and highly skilled pilot, tragically lost his life while demonstrating the capabilities of the Impala Mark 1, registration ZU-IMP—an aircraft cherished for its historical significance among many South Africans.

Eyewitnesses observed that the aircraft remained stable throughout most of the performance. However, during one of the final manoeuvres, it unexpectedly lost altitude and descended sharply before crashing into the ground. There was no indication that the pilot attempted to eject. The accident occurred at Saldanha Vredenburg Municipal Airport (FASD). According to a statement released by Aviation Central, there was no sign of an attempt to eject before the aircraft impacted the ground.

James O’Connell’s passing is a significant loss to the aviation community. His dedication, skill, and passion for flight were evident to all who knew him. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time.

As we mourn this loss, let us also remember the inherent risks that come with the pursuit of aviation excellence. May his memory serve as a reminder of the bravery and commitment embodied by those in the field of aviation.

It cannot be gainsaid that aviation, while awe-inspiring and essential for global connectivity and the seamless movement of goods and persons, comes with inherent risks. Airshows, in particular, are high-intensity events that push aircraft and pilots to their operational limits. This tragedy serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of aviation safety protocols and ongoing risk mitigation efforts.

In honouring James’s legacy, we remain steadfast in our commitment to safety, innovation, and the relentless pursuit of knowledge in the skies.
