Kroonstad, South Africa: On the weekend of 25-26 July 2025, the skies over Kroonstad were filled with more than just the hum of engines – they were alive with possibility, promise, and the echo of young dreams. At the heart of this energy was the community engagement event held at the Kroonstad Airfield, led by the Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS) in collaboration with Moqhaka Municipality, and other key partners.

Over 120 learners from the surrounding areas descended on the airfield for a full-day career expo spanning over two days, designed to open their eyes – and hearts – to the myriad of opportunities that exist in the aviation sector. As Flying Jurist, we are proud to have been part of this impactful initiative, and even more so to witness firsthand how collaboration between industry, government, civil society, and education stakeholders can create a lasting impact.

One of the defining highlights of the day was the unforgettable experience of aeroplane flips offered to the learners, courtesy of the generous Mr Mkhize, who made his personal aircraft available for circuit flights. For many of these learners, it was their first time aboard an aircraft, and the joy on their faces was nothing short of transformative.

Equally generous was Fannie, the owner of the on-site hangar, who opened his doors to allow learners access to static aircraft displays. These hands-on interactions brought textbook diagrams to life. The day was further enriched by the presence of General Ngema (Retired), a dedicated airman who gave a practical and animated briefing on how aircraft control surfaces function – rudders, ailerons, elevators – breaking down complex aerodynamics into relatable, tactile learning.

The ATNS mobile simulator bus became a buzzing hub of activity, where learners got a hands-on experience of what it’s like to manage air traffic – demystifying the critical but often invisible work of air traffic service units. The able and energetic ATNS team was out in full force, providing guidance on industry requirements, career paths, and motivation for those considering the aviation field.

Perhaps the most grounding part of the day came from Mr Zola Majavu, the Chairperson of the ATNS Board and a well-respected legal professional. He spent considerable time on the ground with the learners, offering nuggets of wisdom on what it takes to pursue careers in aviation – as air traffic controllers, drone pilots, or commercial aviators. His approachable presence and authentic storytelling resonated deeply with both learners and educators present.

The Flying Jurist team also captured the day’s energy through our media team, which engaged students in interviews and reflections. As CEO of Flying Jurist, I had the honour of engaging with learners directly on what it takes to become a pilot, sharing critical insights on academic requirements, medical fitness, and funding avenues.

Also present was Majavu Inc, the renowned legal firm, which partnered with us to provide young minds with information on how to pursue a career in law – complementing our aviation focus by reinforcing the idea that the skies are not the only limit.

Special mention must also go to i-Stutter Foundation, whose presence and engagement reminded us of the importance of inclusive spaces and of ensuring that no child is left behind due to challenges they may face in communication.

This event in Kroonstad was more than just a career expo – it was a collective statement of belief in the potential of our youth. It was about taking aviation, often perceived as an elite and distant field, and grounding it in community, in aspiration, and in action.

At Flying Jurist, we remain committed to building platforms that make the aviation industry more inclusive, accessible, and transformative. The weekend in Kroonstad reminded us that even the sky is not the limit – it’s just the beginning.
