Elizabeth A Lourens is a practicing Advocate of the High Court of South Africa and Aviation law specialist. She is also the Vice President of the Society for International Aviation Law NPC (SIAL).
She started a legal career in the year 2000 and obtained her LLB degree from the University of Pretoria in 2004. She practiced as an Advocate of the High Court at the Pretoria Society of Advocates from 8 February 2006 till the end of 2017. Since the year 2017 to date she has been a practicing member of the Johannesburg Society of Advocates.
Throughout her years 19 years in practice Adv Lourens has worked with a wide range of national and international clients and law firms in the aviation sector on legal issues ranging from regulatory framework development, aviation legal compliance issues, the release of attached aircraft globally, disputes on aeronautical charges regulated by diverse legal systems, litigation on the development and implementation of ICAO and EASA standards and recommended practices, national regulatory compliance disputes involving the Civil Aviation Act 13 of 2009 and its regulations, disputes between airlines both nationally and internationally, airline IATA compliance requirements and implementations, delictual and insurance claims arising from aircraft accidents.
She has participated in various aviation seminars, including the seminar on Aircraft Leasing and Finance presented by Clyde & Co in Namibia during 2024.
She further completed a certificate in “the Fundamentals of International Aviation Law” at the University of Cape Town and presently concluding a LLM post graduate Degree in International Aviation Law under the supervision of Dist. Prof Philipe – Joseph Salazar at the University of Cape Town to be completed in September 2025, whereafter it will forthwith be converted to completion of a PhD degree.
As one of her aviation transformation goals, Adv Lourens collaborated with Prof Angelo Dube in the establishment of the Society for International Aviation Law which was launched at the 4th Annual APGroN Conference held in Cape Town from 18 to 20 September 2024. The Society seeks, amongst others, to develop a white paper to be submitted for presentation and consideration at the Conference on the Economics of Airport and Air Navigation Services (CEANS) as held by ICAO, on facilitating an addendum to the Chicago Convention on the development of a uniform system regulating aeronautical fees and the attachment of aircraft internationally.
The foundation of success to her is a passion for justice and a commitment to the development and implementation of a uniform Aviation Law system internationally.
